If people use less gas, there is less demand for petroleum. Petroleum is traded in US dollars called petrodollars. Less demand for petroleum means less US dollars will be required to buy it. If the world needs less US dollars, the value of the dollar goes down tremendously. If the value of the US dollar goes down tremendously, the US could collapse. It is the backbone of national security.

Tom's system would have been a major break through. Main reason it didn't catch wasThe system wasn't really attractive under the hood and produced less horsepower. It was also expensive. Plus was still in experimental stages and the 200mph was still theoretical. Tom died due to an accidental overdose or suicide. His financial backers, pulled out, his wife left him, had a serious gambling addiction and occasionally mixed pain pills with alcohol.
Why suicide? He was probably killed by companies who didn't want the invention from becoming popular
