Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone to testify before Jan. 6 committee

Former White House counsel Pat Cipollone will testify before the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot on Friday.

Cipollone has emerged as a key witness who could testify about former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. He will meet for a closed-door interview, according to multiple reports. The committee issued a subpoena last Wednesday to compel Cipollone to appear for a deposition.

JAN. 6 COMMITTEE SUBPOENAS TRUMP WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL PAT CIPOLLONE

“The Select Committee’s investigation has revealed evidence that Mr. Cipollone repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump’s activities on January 6th and in the days that preceded,” Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) said in a statement last Wednesday. “Any concerns Mr. Cipollone has about the institutional prerogatives of the office he previously held are clearly outweighed by the need for his testimony.”

Cipollone sat for an “informal interview” with the committee on April 13, though he declined to provide on-the-record testimony, citing presidential privilege.

The subpoena came one day after Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified that Cipollone had told her there were “serious legal concerns” if Trump went to the Capitol after he delivered his “Stop the Steal” speech on the White House Ellipse on Jan. 6.

Trump has argued that the subpoena for Cipollone’s testimony sets a “terrible precedent” and repeatedly sought to discredit the committee’s work as a political witch hunt.
