“There’s a rainbow always after the rain.” This phrase was popped in my mind when I watch the movie. It is towards repentance, selfless love, forgiveness, compassion, and amnesty. Les Miserables for me was an excellent musical performance in the world. Last week, I was given the chance to watch the 2012 Les Miserables and I enjoyed it. Starring Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russel Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Isabelle Allen as little Cosette, Amanda Seyfried as adult Cosette, Eddie Redmayne as Marius, Samantha Barks as Eponine, and Daniel Huttlestone as Gavroche. However, the movie got my attention by the actors and actresses that effectively portrayed their roles.
In the beginning, Jean Valjean (24601) was freed from 19 years of being in prison by inspector Javert. Once freed, he rebuilt his identity from stolen silver as a mayor and factory owner. With that act, Javert will find him to bring him back to jail. I admired him most when he showed love to Fantine by caring her until her death and then adopted Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. He showed his love to her and treated Cosette as his own daughter, that he will do everything just to protect her.
We are introduced to Fantine, who is burdened with an illegitimate child. Soon found out by her fellow workers which caused her to lose her job. Fantine turned to prostitution for the sake of her child Cosette. Nowadays, I know that prostitution is very common to us. There vulnerable people and indigent around the world like Fantine. And I believed that in helping them not just only by the government but all of us, we can make a difference.
Another character that holds my attention is Cosette. She depicts an alluring role in the movie. Like her mother, she suffered too. But in Cosette’s case, it is in the hand of the family of her mother whom entrusted. At her young age, she was maltreated and abused by them. It was bothering why Fantine gave her trust in caring her beloved Cosette to these cruel people but feel relieved when she was adopted by Jean Valjean who took the responsibilities being a father and mother to her.
I gave a great admiration for the next character, Gavroche. He emblematizes the youth, showing he can make something difference. At his young age showing courage and very self-confident, he joined the revolutionaries at the barricade. There, he fearlessly revealed that Javert is actually a spy. Then, an exchanging of gunfire with the soldiers happened. Gavroche heard Enjolras saying that they’re lacking of dry ammunition. He’s very determined that he can help. He goes throughout a way in the barricade to get dry ammunition from the dead soldiers. While collecting cartridges and singing, he was shot by the soldiers. This brave Gavroche makes me realized that you can do something, we can make a difference despite of our age. I salute him for that!
On the other hand, Inspector Javert completes the quintessence of the story. He was very determined to send back Jean Valjean in the jail. He spent almost his life just to find him. Javert was so obsessed. Well, maybe he made it because he has been found Jean Valjean. But in the other hand, he failed. 24601, Jean Valjean who he hated so much dared not to take the shot against him, instead he showed forgiveness. Javert finally realized his selfish actions and committed suicide.
In the end, Jean Valjean went to convent, away from Cosette. But before he go, he revealed his past to Marius and dare not to tell Cosette about it and instead, say that he was just going to travel. But once Marius found out that Jean Valjean was the man who saved him in the revolution, the couple went to the convent to console him on his deathbed.
I definitely love the movie for I am a music-lover person. There songs were delivered greatly by the artists. These songs are one of the best theatrical pieces I’ve heard. This story exposes things in the world such as, unfair judgements, discriminations and injustices. Les Miserables is a form of movie that enlightened our minds to see what’s happening around us and what we can do for it. Love conquers everything; they will even sacrifice their lives for their love ones and others. As long as our dominion is love, there’s peacefulness. No matter what happen, goodness is still there. Even bad persons can change into a better person. Whatever struggles is that, how big your problem is, just always remember that God is in control. Generally, the movie was great! Now, who among the characters was considered as yourself?
